Look up S. Kimura and K. Shiota. Sequential changes of programmed cell death in developing fetal mouse limbs and its possible roles in limb morphogenesis. Journal of Morphology vol 229 pages 337-346 (1996).

They used Nile blue to stain apoptotic nuclei, which are seen in cells that died by apoptosis.
