RE: goat serum

From:Cynthia Favara

I usually do not use a protein block unless I have a problem when working up
a new antibody.

Most of my nonspecific background comes from in-house sticky antibodies.

Are many people still using a protein block on their formalin-fixed,
paraffin-embedded tissue sections for immunohistochemistry? We haven't
used a protein block (i.e., nonimmune serum) for several years now and we
never see nonspecific staining.

Does anyone out there know where to purchase bulk goat serum for us to
dilute for blocking? We are really being pushed to cut corners and have to
stop using Dako's protein block.

Thanks in advance,
Gene
