I use a variation on Gayle's method. I buy Mayer's modified hematoxylin
from Polyscience, Cat# s216, dilute it 1/40 with distilled water and stain
for 3 minutes, then blue for 1 minute in homemade Scott's tap water. The
result is a very nice light blue counterstain which contrasts beautifully
with DAB. It is only good for 1 day also but is very cheap to make this way!
