I like the Pinkerton's method of the Machavellos---staining in methylene
blue solution overnight and with basic fuchsin solution for 30
minutes.  In my work (animal tissues) I found it to be the best of the
differential stains for coxiella.  However we now use an IHC for
confirmation.
