Dear Liz
This is an age old problem, did you try a wrights stain , then buffer till a 
green sheen comes up, then rinse. It is very hard to standardize this system. 
Also are there any spray fixatives on the slide? Try a methanol fix step, 
then stain, it may improve the outcome.
