This is from "Hazardous Materials in the Histopathology Laboratory", by
Dapson (Anatech)
"Once thought to be quite safe, limonene now is considered to be a
serious health risk for increasing numbers of histotechnologists. Because
it is a sensitizer, prolonged or repeated exposure predisposes individuals
to allergic reactions. These generally take the form of respiratory
distress: difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest and, in rare
cases, potentially life-threatening anaphylasix."
We had somebody with asthma that did have a problem with the limonene
solvent that we were using. We replaced it and there were no other problems
(although the person has since left the lab).
