Eric,
We like you have supplied a service for the Renal Unit since 1984.
This has always been a 24hour 365day a year service.
Initially we only processed Transplant specimens (Renal and Pancreas
and the occasional Liver) by a rapid microwave process. There were
approximately 5-6 per week. Now all renal biopsies (both diagnostic
and transplant are processed with a maximum 4hours turn around)
between 0730 to 1700. Then the on-call staff handle them, again with
a maximum 4 hour turn around from receipt of specimen to diagnosis.
We now process on average between 15-20 per week, the bulk of which
are performed during the above laboratory hours. Our on-call staff
would only get called about once a month on average outside these
hours.
