Joanne
Hale's method was first published in 1946 (Nature V157:802). The
Muller-Mowry variant (Ann NY Acad Sci V106:402; 1963) was developed to
overcome poor quality commercial colloidal iron. The method controls the
behaviour of colloidal iron by mild dialysys to remove most of the free
hydrochloric acid, and by adding acetic cid, to achieve a pH level of about
1.6 to 1.9 for optimal selectivity.
