I don't know about staining manganese, but try a
PubMed search for WR Markesbery. He has published a
lot about the possible colocalization of manganese
with Alzheimer plaques. I think he used atomic
absorption spectroscopy (to give you an idea of the
levels present). The EDS work I did on plaques
(1980's) showed little or no accumulation of
manganese--not much consistent evidence for aluminum
either.
Try a PubMed search for manganese as well. I didn't
find much in a very quick search on manganese and
Alzheimer's.
