RE: Disinfecting The Cryostat?

From:"Charles W. Scouten, Ph.D."

Perascope, the disinfectant used in the Vibratome 7500 Self Decontaminating Cryostat, contains peracetic acid and peroxide.  This is shown effective against Tuberculin virus, HIV and several other specific pathogens.  It is a thorough and sufficient disinfectant against anything but prions.  It is safe for stainless steel and cryostat components.  To see the Material safety data sheet, go to the following link, and click Application Note in the tan box to the right of the picture.

Formalin fuming is not very effective (and may be not at all effective) on a frozen surface. To work properly it is recommended to defrost then leave an open dish of 37% formalin in the closed cryostat overnight.
Bleach will corrode stainless steel if left on for extended periods.

It's always been my understanding that bleach coorodes the metal becuase it doesn't evaporate like it does at room temp.  When we have a TB case and they mistakenly use the cryostat that doesn't self decontaminate, we put a small container of formalin in it and don't use it untill the formalin freezes. Then we clean out all the shavings and start anew....  I don't know where that came from though...
