Have used these and they are fine once they are wet. You can't wet them with formalin (just like those b***** foam sponges).
Just close one, put it in formalin and watch it float. It will never sink without holding it under, weighing it with lead, or simply lowering the surface tension with alcohol. The latter works well.
The fact of the matter is that the holes are too small to allow water (formalin) through without some form of a "push".
