Re: Coding issue for cytology-does anyone believe this?

In our hospital we routinely charge for special stains on cytology specimens (bug stains thru IHC stains.)  We also routinely review all rejected claims on the billing end.   We have never had a problem getting reimbursed for these stains thru any insurance company and/or Medicare.

In CPT 2002, under the Cytopathology code #88162 it clearly states "(for special stains, see 88312-88314)."

Hope this helps.
