Brett,

formaldehyde diffuses at about 1mm (0.78mm) per hour at room temperature.
this value, along with rates for other fixatives was determined by Medawar
in the early 40's on liver which is a pretty homogeneous tissue. rates in
other tissues i expect would be different based on composition.
