Around here, when specimens are brought in, the person bringing them must
go to the secretaries desk where they give EVERYTHING an accession number,
whether it's for histopath, microbiology, virus screening or toxicology.
No computers involved, just one really big log book.  All pathologists trim
in their own tissues... I don't get that little chore usually, but
sometimes I do.
