We used the Cerner system which was designed in the same way. The beauty of
using it that way is that it keeps you from accidently giving the same
number to two different cases. However, they did give us a way to reserve
numbers, so we'd reserve a bunch of them, keep a list, and mark off the list
as we used them. Perhaps your system has something similar?

Good luck!
