Hazel,
We keep a written log that only includes the accession number, the specimen
type, the number of blocks submitted, and any special instructions/stains.
We feel the same way as you - we can't imagine not having this. We could
not come up with a computer-generated log that was short and sweet but still
included this info. We work off of this log when we're cutting.

It appears from all the responses to the order entry question that most of
you do not use a log book anymore??
We still manually log all specimens into a log book and then log them into
our computer system (Meditech) at our convenience. I cannot imagine not
having our log book.
