What about using a different method to avoid the ABC (avidin kit)
such as a purified primary and a directly labelled (HRP or alk phos) 
secondary, and take the avidin/biotin out of the loop entirely.  

You might lose a bit of sensitivity, hope I said that correctly!, but
it would remove this mast cell binding to avidin problem.  Just a thought.
