Well, I have been watching this thread and decided to make one more post
before retiring on Friday. :)


It probably isn't a good safe way to remove the silver nitrate, but I did
it easily back in my first few years in the field when we knew nothing
about "hazzards"  It may be about the same as some of the suggestions tho
and worked well. :)

So here's my parting story, altho I will stay tuned into Histonet from my
personal account.

Back when Pipeting by mouth was "in vogue"  I sucked in some silver
nitrate which drew quickly up the pipet and into my mouth.  Quickly
thinking of the reason for Iodine and Sodium Thiosulfate in the staining
procedure, I took a swig of Iodine, swirled it like a Listerine wash,
disposed of it, then took a mouthfull of Sodium Thiosulfate x 2 and did
the same, followed with copious amounts of water rinses. (Deionized, of
course)  Headed for Employee Health who examined and told me my mouth
looked clean.  :)  Must not have had any bad results as I lived long enuff
to retire. *Evil Grin* So after that, when spilling any on counters etc. I
used the same remedy.

PS  During the "treatment" I had visions of a totaly black mouth and
lips...wonder if thats what these kid's use on their lips nowadays. :)

 I have an old tube of commercial stain remover called Erada-Stain, I don't
know if it is still on the market and I havn't used it on silver nitrate.  I
believe you can only get rid of the stain by letting the skin wear off or
sandpapering it off.
