Dear Judy,
Try re-fixing your slides after the DAB reaction.  The reaction product can
diffuse away from the labeling site if it is not fixed.  You can also try
enhancing the DAB color with nickel chloride.  There are a lot of ref's for
this step.  It results in a bluish-black color.
