Hi Marilyn,

Here at NCFAD in Winnipeg we are involved in surveillance for both BSE and CWD.
We do H&Es on targeted areas as well as IHC on one or more sections from each case. We usually try to use the obex for IHC if it is available.
I was told that IHC will pick up the PrP even if there are no spongiform changes seen on the H&E section. I haven't got any references or papers in front of me right now but if you like I could dig out a few for you.
