Dear Jennell,

ATCC  is good source for Gram stain controls. I have
routinely seen Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 used as a Gram-positive
control and Escherichia coli 25922 used as a Gram-negative control.

In my laboratory we grow cultures of these strains on Plate Count Agar or
Tryptic Soy Agar with Yeast Extract for use with Gram staining performed the
next day.

Is this the type of information you wanted or did I misread your question?
