Mast cell staining

From:Cheryl Crowder

Richard - We do a lot of staining for mast cells. We have found that a
modified Giemsa (with Jenner staining) and the Toluidine Blue are
excellent for determining both types of mast cells. In addition to the
Alcian Blue at pH 1, you can try the Thionine pH 1. That stain will
stain only mast cells, so you need to make your tissue area first to be
able to tell the tissue orientation when the stain is complete. In most
cases the mast cell tumor is diagnosed not only on number of mast cells
but the pattern in which the tissues are. Hope this helps. Cheryl
