In Cape Town,  South Africa at the private pathologists where I work, as QC
co-ordinator, the Histotechs get paid over and above their salary for each
specimen that they gross. The rate in our currency is R5.00 for every small
specimen inc Bx's and R8.00 for each large one e.g. uteri.. One tech can put
through up to 40 specimens per day so if you add that up it is quite a lot
over and above their salary, which for a qualified tech with 4-5 years
experience is about R5000  a month. They gross everything with the exception
of bowels, stomachs, breasts and any large malignant looking. tumours.
