We used to do an interesting experiment in my teaching days to show how
fixatives work.
We used to take about a ml of egg white in narrow test tubes and add a whole
set of fixatives (alcohols, aldehydes, metal salts, organic acids)and follow
the increasing opacity of the denatured egg-white over time (the interface
of the two liquids would turn white first and then ...). It was a very
simple and effective demo of fixation of proteins.
