I also work for the government. My agency does not little to recognize the ASCP Board of Registry as anything but a title (which they like)! Our agency does recognize the ACVP (veterinary pathologists), PhD and master graduates. If you have enough college credits to be classified as a chemist or a microbiologist you are eligible to begin at a GS-9 and go up: GS-10,11,12,13. And as a higher grade, you can officially become a supervisor and go even higher!!!

Biological Laboratory Technician are counted rare and lucky to get to the GS-9 level and in our laboratories there are only about ten GS-9 level BLTs out of about 150 lab personnel (includes chem, micro, path and support). Only one in the pathology lab.

In the chemistry and microbiology sections, there are four levels of employees; techs (GS-5,7,9), chemists/microbiologists(GS-9&11), section supervisors(GS-12), the chemist- or microbiologist-in-charge (GS-13/14). But somehow when they structured the Pathology section they ended up with techs (GS-5,7,9) and pathologists(GS-13) and the Pathologists in charge (GS-14)....no in-between positions.

Although I have the same number of college credits as microbiologists or chemists, I cannot attain their grade or pay levels unless I want to transfer to chemistry or micro.

The last time I was vocal about the topic I was informed that to become classified as a HISTOTECHNOLOGIST I would have to deal with HUMAN tissues. And since we don't, I can't. But difference between human and animal tissue is minimal. The same level of expertise & professionalism is expected. We do paraffins, frozens, and immunohistochemistry. Every year we take on new areas and more work.

I've been here since the lab was just a year old. I love my work and the challanges it provides. Somewhere else my skills would earn me more. If I didn't have only 5 years till retirement and a first grandchild on the way.......I would be checking out all those jobs listed on the Histonet.

I digress. I will be attending the Charlotte meeting. I will be attending the Region III meeting. I will be voicing my opionion against CEU's not for myself but for all my fellow Federal and private industry employees who don't have meetings "fall in their backyard" so they can go on their own.

Sandi, I wonder how many Federally employed registered (HT/HTL) techs, BLTs and others just working in the histology field actually work for the government? Any ideas on how we can track them down, form a coalition and tackle this problem?

Barbara Stancel

USDA, FSIS, Eastern Lab, Pathology

Richard B.
