RE: glass slide labeling systems

REPOSTED DUE TO TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES:
Dear Dina et. al.,
There is actually no such thing as a Fisher brand slide labeler. Fisher
sells
the TBS (SHUR/Mark) branded unit, which we designed and manufacture. We
also
make a virtually identical unit which is sold through Shandon. They are
both
excellent, though not inexpensive. When properly adjusted, they actually
engrave characters through an Erie ColorMark slide's paint into the glass
itself for truly permanent marking. Several companies are currently working
on
inkjet technology printers which would directly label painted or frosted
slides. At least one of these units should be distributed within a year
or so.
It sounds as if this type of printer is what you would prefer; but they
aren't
quite ready yet, and would probably cost as much as existing units. Have
you
considered using self-adhesive labels generated by a Zebra or similar
label
printer? Some significant problems with adhesive labels have been solved
within the last year or so. I've been wondering how many labs are currently
using the stick-on labels with good results. Does anyone on Histonet have
experiences to relate? We're keenly interested, of course, since we're
in the
labeler business.
I hope this is helpful to Dina and others.
