Dear Mary,
Re-implanting parathyroids - now that's interesting.  Is the group 
using the "new" parathyroid hormone assays that can be done 
during surgery thus confirming when the surgeaon has "got it"?

Blimey, that's a long sentence!

We have a group who do hormone assays whilst the patient is on 
the table (they have their machine in theatre).  Because they - the 
hormones - have a short half-life, levels drop quickly enough for 
surgeons to have a quick cup of coffee and then return to find out 
whether (s)he has to look further for those elusive glands.

I can see where re-implantation has advantages.
