Back when we were a lab of 12 people we used to use CAP workload units to
each task also. In addition each tech was required to hand in a log of the
tissues/blocks/slides/sections they worked up each month. We were downsized
to five people a few years ago and that method of keeping track of
productivity flew out the window. It was too time consuming, in other
words, a big hassle. Today, when assignments are completed all data
concerning numbers of tissues/blocks/etc. are entered into our database (by
the tech doing the work) and totals are calculated each month by the
supervisor. As far as I know we just average the amount of work with the
number of techs doing the work. The department admin people then put the
data into a graph which shows totals each month for the past five years.
This graph, along with a summary table, is passed on to the Director of our
unit. I guess this is whatt they use to justify people/equipment in our
unit.
