cytokine IHC

Keep having the same debate in the lab re: use (necessity) of saponin in
tissues (both paraffin or frozen) when doing cytokine IHC.  Hear that it is
indispensable.  Hear that it can be dispensed with.  One can do cytoplasmic
IHC staining (kappa/lambda/insulin/glucagon/etc.,etc.) just fine without
one bit of saponin.  Why are cytokines any different?  If you are
sectioning through the cell and are able to label things internally, then
you are sectioning through the cell and are able to label things
internally.  Anybody care to get me on the right track.
