  Alcian blue at pH 2.5 stains the contents of intestinal goblet
  cells a pleasing turquoise-blue. This colour is not extracted by
  later washing, staining, dehydrating etc. This is the tip of the
  iceburg of carbohydrate histochemistry with dyes.
