Currently there is an opening for a Biological Science
Laboratory Technician
in the Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases,
Infectious Disease
Pathology Activity (IDPA)of the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention
(CDC). This position has just been announced and will be
open for
applications until January 13,1999.

The IDPA serves as a scientific and technical resource to
CDC by providing
expertise in molecular pathology, histopathology, and
electron microscopy
analysis for detecting infectious disease agents in human
and animal
tissues. We also conduct basic and applied research into
the pathogenesis of
infectious diseases as well as consultative diagnostic
support and epidemic
aid to state, federal, and international health
organizations.

DUTIES:
The incumbent performs work involving biological
laboratory techniques
used in studying tissues, or microscopic and
submicroscopic organisms.
Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment,
controls supplies, and
maintains and controls hardcopy and computerized
laboratory records.
Controls stock of reagents, antigens, or other media or
control
substances/chemical. Ensures an appropriate environment
is maintained and
that an effective system is in place to control stock
levels and maintain a
high quality in the products. Uses appropriate handling
procedures for
hazardous specimens, chemicals, etc. Adheres to safe
laboratory practices
for working in biosafety environments. Properly disposes
of potentially
infectious waste materials or other potentially hazardous
waste. Maintains
records describing results pertaining to tests and
examinations performed.
Prepares production or other reports as scheduled or
requested by the
supervisor. Prepares assays in accordance with
professional standards.
Participates in the introduction of new assays in the
laboratory.
Establishes effective record keeping procedures, provides
training on
procedures and establishes quality control methods to
ensure effective use
of the system, and to identify inadequacies/discrepancies.
Maintains
accurate and detailed records of all laboratory
experiments, test,
examinations, and results to provide adequate information
on which
professional determinations can be made.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must meet the basic qualification requirements
outlined in OPM
Qualification Standards Handbook. Applicants must have one
year of
specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next
lower grade in the
Federal service. Specialized Experience: is that which is
directly related
to the position and which has equipped the applicant with
the particular
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) to successfully
perform the duties
of the position, such as performing work in a laboratory
involved with
studying tissues, or microscopic and submicroscopic
organisms.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
For the GS-7 level: one full year of graduate education or
superior academic
achievement.
For the GS-9 level: two full years of graduate education
or a master's
degree
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized
experience
required in those instances where it is directly related
to the work of the
position.
