Histonetters,

There will be an opening for a Medical Technologist (This is a
Histotechnologist job, but is considered a Medical Technologist level)
in the Division of Viral and Rickettsial Diseases, Infectious Disease
Pathology Activity (IDPA) of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC). We anticipate this position will be announced on
January 6, 1999 and will be open for applications until January 27,

The IDPA serves as a scientific and technical resource to CDC by
providing expertise in molecular pathology, histopathology, and electron
microscopy analysis for detecting infectious disease agents in human and
animal tissues. We also conduct basic and applied research into the
pathogenesis of infectious diseases as well as consultative diagnostic
support and epidemic aid to state, federal, and international health
organizations.

DUTIES:

The incumbent processes animal and human tissues for histologic
examination utilizing routine (hematoxylin and eosin) and special
staining procedures for the identification for infectious agents and
tissue components. Performs specialized pathology techniques to detect
the presence of infectious disease agent antigens, proteins and nucleic
acids in clinical/research tissues. Independently analyzes results of
assays and suggests modifications to established protocols to solve
problems encountered in research. Organizes and prepares incoming
samples for pathology studies. Develops and designs quality control
procedures for new molecular pathology tests as they are introduced into
the laboratory and modifies existing procedures as needs change.
Develops and consults on the basic design of experiments in which
histologic immunohistologic and molecular pathology procedure are
required. Instructs and supervises students, residents, and research
fellow in laboratory procedures and in the theoretical and practical
aspects of quality assurance.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must meet the basic qualification requirements outlined in
OPM Qualification Standards Handbook. Applicants must have successfully
completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or
university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a
major field of study or specific course requirements; degree:  medical
technology, chemistry, or biology that included or was supplemented by
at least 16 hours of biological science of which one course was in
microbiology and one course in immunology; 16 hours of chemistry of
which one course was in organic or biochemistry. The remaining chemistry
courses must have been in general, qualitative analysis, qualitative
chemistry, quantitative chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical
chemistry, or any of the four areas, clinical laboratory science, and 3
semester hours of college mathematics. Applicants must have one year of
specialized experience at a level equivalent to the next lower grade in
the Federal service.

Specialized Experience: is that which is directly related to the
position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular
knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the
duties of the position, such as performing routine histologic procedures
to prepare samples for staining or specialized immunohistochemical and
molecular procedures.


  SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
For the GS-7 level: one full year of graduate education or superior
academic achievement.
  For the GS-9 level: two full years of graduate education or a master's
degree
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience
required in those instances where it is directly related to the work of
the position.

Applicants will be rated on the basis of education, experience, and KSA
