HIV viral protein can be identified in formalin-fixed tissue by using
immunohistochemistry. Note that not all tissues from HIV-infected
persons will show immunoreactivity. There may be legal issues in doing
this if you do not have the patient's consent.

Does anyone out there know if is possible to determine HIV status on a
formalin-fixed paraffin embedded sample? Perhaps by PCR methods? I have
seen a few references but wonder if this is being done in a diagnostic
setting.
