RE: Xylene Resistent Labels

From:Andrea Grantham

Joyce,
We are looking for the "perfect label" to suit our needs here. I'm
wondering if there is one? I just received 3 types of sample labels from
Electronic Imaging Materials, Inc. www.eiminc.com
I tried them out yesterday putting labels on two sets of slides. One set
was placed in the oven (as we would place slides in the oven to dry) while
the other set was not heated. I didn't notice a difference in the two sets
after going through the H&E stain line that would have been caused by
heating. Heating didn't seem to effect the adhesive.
There were labels marked "XyResist" and although they came through the
Xylene OK they took up the stain colors.
Other labels, called "717 XyRepel" were preprinted and had a coating over
the written part and worked wonderfully. The preprinted part my be the
problem in this lab.
A third type of label had a clear laminate that you applied after the
labels were printed. This worked well however there was some stain that
remained around the edges.
To print the labels you need a thermal transfer printer - cost is @$560 and
transfer ribbons were $12 and could print about 3500 labels. Then there was
the software and you can get real fancy with software so the price depends
on what software you choose.
We are still evaluating and so far have only tried these samples. If
anybody else out there has a label to suggest please do so. We are looking
for a low cost slide labeling system since we are a low volume lab.

I just excitedly purchased xylene resistant labels, but have learned the ink
is not heat resistant!
What xylene, heat resistant ink, label withstands both? Thanks, j
