Glass slides...infectious waste?

From:Alberto Fernandez

Hello Histonetter--

Inspectors from our local EPA branch are of the opinion that old histology
glass slides, when disposed of, have to be treated as infectious waste. We
have tried to argue that processed tissue in glass slides is sterile, but
they do not agree. Under these circumstances, the cost of discarding the
slides is extremely high, and I believe unnecessarily so.

Does anyone have documentation one way or the other? Does everyone discard
their glass slides as infectious waste? Are other state EPA's as stringent?
