RE: strange question: storage of bone flaps

From:"Garza-Williams, Sara"

Fortunately I'm out of the storage loop. Our Blood Bank Lab has taken over
the process. But I still am assisting with the transition process; which
means procedures, charges and the regulatory process. You are correct its a
major pain! But ultimately a good thing for the Histology Lab.

We did this for awhile at our hospital, but ran in to all kinds of
regulatory problems. We stored them in our blood bank -30C freezer wrapped
in blue OR towels until the surgeon was ready to re-implant. Blood bank who
is regulated by AABB as well as CAP, did not like this and we finally
discontinued the practice because of all the stiff regulations surrounding
autologous material.

I have a strange or odd question for the group:

Is there an institution, hospital, histo lab or clinical lab that receives
and stores bone flaps from patients, which are then surgically returned to
the patient?
My questions are concerning the charges to the patient; How do you charge
the patient for storage (-80) and the logging it, inventory and all that
good stuff that goes into banking autologous material? If so what CPT code
do you use and if I could ask how much ($)?

Also, just for comparison sake: How do you store your specimens? Sterile
container, sterile towels, labeling?

I would appreciate any and all comments, suggestions and input.....
