RE: How long does CAP or ? require retention of surgical pathology pa tient r...

From:Kelly Brown

I do not think there are specifics about off-site storage. According to CAP, they are supposed to be easily retrievable and only 2 years of accession logs is required to be kept. "Easy" is left open for interpretation. Our accession logs are computerized, so several years are in the computer and backed up as well. However, I would think one would want to keep more than 1 or 2 years-- say at least 5 years of accession records in the lab for fast retrieval if these records are not computerized.

We are having a problem with space at our hospital. Does anyone know if
there is a break down of how far back you need to keep the accession
sheets
on site (at the hospital) or when can we shipp them to our storage
facility.
We were thinking, keep a year, but is it regulated anywhere?
