It sounded to me like he thought that the amount of vacation time was appropriate amount of time for giving notice, which is what I have always heard. Not that he was taking vacation and giving 1 extra week. Looks like it depends on the area you are working. I have worked in the North and the South and 2 weeks has been standard.
