Re: What Alcohol do you use? Ethanol vs. Methanol

OPPS!, forgot to mention that we used undenatured ethanol only for brain.  When we tried the ethanol/isopropyl mix we needed to adjust the times downward for processing and still found that the tissue particularly the cerebellum seemed dry.

Subject: What Alcohol do you use? Ethanol vs. Methanol

Dear Histonetters,

We currently use a denatured, lab grade alcohol which consists of 95 parts ethyl and 5 parts isopropyl.  We are considering a switch to a mixture of 90 parts ethyl, 5 parts isopropyl and 5 parts methyl.  We will be using this reagent alcohol on our processor and stainer.  We are considering the switch for a simple reason:  easy pour bottles!  Would there be a noticeable difference in processing/staining due to the different makeup?  What is everyone else using?

thanks,
