H & E works extremely well for this purpose. One identifies neutrophils in 
tissue sections by their small, dark, multiply lobed nuclei. I would be 
reluctant to go beyond H & E in making a diagnosis of chronic active 
gastritis (which requires the presence of neutrophils) in gastric biopsy 
material, and which is strongly associated with Helicobacter pylori infection.
