Re: AFB's/ruling out jumping bacilli

From:Rachel Stoat

We stain our slides on a rack with the control tissue in a separate block,
and don't have any problems with "jumping bacilli" in our ZN technique.
However, we have had problems with our Auramine Rhodamine technique which
uses a coplin jar. We have had a few cases where the original sections
contained a few stray bacilli, but after re-making and/or filtering the
solution the sections were negative. We now make a point of always
filtering the solution before it's used and do both staining methods on
consecutive sections.
