Regarding automated microtomes - there is a wide range here from semi
automated to fully automated and some with memory functions. The key is to
try them out and see what fits your needs.
The Ergostar previously mentioned falls into the semi motorized category and
is a very good microtome - and is ergonomic!
I recently had my lab purchase a Microm 355S and I love it. This microtome
can be used to cut manually (when you just have to finesse the tissue a bit
more than usual) or in the motorized mode. I cut all types of animal tissue
that is well fixed and processed and I am forever doing serial sections or
step sections. This is an excellent microtome for these tasks.
**Disclaimer: For a while a few years ago I was a sales rep and sold the
Microm microtomes BUT I was a Microm fan before I was a rep AND when I bought
this one I had a demo of a competing microtome and tried others out at the
NSH show in Milwaukee - the 355 just fit my needs better.
