My students like "Color Textbook of Histology" by Gartner and Hiatt.
Fewer photos than "Wheater's Functional Histology" someone else recommended,
but a lot more explanatory text. G&H has very good 3-D drawings that help a
lot in understanding the architecture of tissues.
"Histology" by Ross, Romrell and Kay is also quite good.
