Dear Ann
It is possible that the cross linking of proteins from formldehyde caused 
negativity, how long was it fixed, I will bet it was longer than the B5, also 
did you use same protocol on each tissue, stronger digestion or retrieval may 
unmask the EBV in the formalin fixed tissue. Have experienced this as well as 
the opposite, steaming too long caused false positivity.
