Rita,

I think what you are referring is Drierite. It is a drying agent that will
change from blue to pink when it becomes saturated with water. Molecular
sieves do not come with indicators in them.

It is very hard to keep reagents used in processing to their true
percentage. I
never used drying agents in tissue processing, I just changed solutions
frequently enough not to have this type of problem. Drying agents are very
useful in getting water out of reagents. Optimally, it is a good idea to dry
reagents just before use. Drying reagents only hold a certain amount of
moisture before becoming exhausted. Molecular sieves and Drierite can be dried
in an oven and reused.

I can send you an article I wrote for Microscopy Today explaining the use of
Molecular Sieves for drying reagents. Just send me your Fax#.

The processing problem you mentioned is can be due to the temperature of the
paraffin baths, length of time in alcohol or both.

EM Science sells Drierite, Molecular Sieves and other dying reagents.
Check out
our website You can do a product search by name. If you go into Tech
Corner on
the website and enter the FAQ section you will find additional information on
drying reagents. http://www.emscience.com

Subject: PROCESSOR QUESTION

HELLO HISTONETER,
WE HAVE 2 VIP'S ONE IS 10 YEARS OLD AND WE HAVE THE BRAND NEW VIP WHICH IS
ABOUT 4 MONTHS OLD. MY QUESTION WE ARE FINDING OUT THAT OUR ALCOHOLS HAVE
CHANGE IN STRENGTH. WE ARE PUTTING OWN 80,95,100%. WE ARE FINDING OUT THAT
SOMETIME THE TISSUE LOOKS LIKE IT IS COOKED. WHEN WE START CHECKING THE
SOLUTION WE ARE FINDING THAT WE DO NOT HAVE TRUE %. ONE OF OUR PATHOLOGIST
SAID WHEN HE WAS IN SCHOOL THERE WAS A SOLUTION THAT YOU PUT IN THE SCHOOL
TO LET YOU KNOW IF IT WAS A TRUE 100% IT WOULD TURN COLOR. HE CAN NOT
REMEMBER IF WAS PINK OR BLUE. ANY SUGGESTION OWN HOW WE CAN SOLVE THIS
PROBLEM. WE USE A LOT OF AGAR WITH OUR SMALL SPECIMEN SO THINGS ARE BRITTLE
AND HARD. TRYING REPROSSING AND IT WAS JUST AWFUL. THANKS FOR ANY
SUGGESTION.

RITA
