Dear Tony,
Maybe my mind is on "hold"(it often is) but - I don't remember ever
seeing any of my thousands of decal solutions turn purple. This is most
interesting to me. The first thing that came to mind was - were these
bones labeled with something like Alizarin Red(has a purple tinge to it)?
Or was a marking dye applied somewhere to the surface? Does it add color
to the unstained section? This could be convenient - kind of like a
built-in hematoxlin:-) Also, you didn't state what kind of decal solution
you were using.
