sucrose cryoprotectant

I have used this cryoprotectant alot in the past few years!  I and my
scientists swear by it!  Just recently one of these scientists wanted the
original reference to its use.  Believe it or not, no one knows where it
came from around here.  Does someone out there in Histoland have a
reference.  The recipe I have is:

Dissolve 42.8 g of sucrose  & 0.7 g Magnesium chloride (6 H20) in 250 ml
PBS and add 250 ml glycerol
