plastic embedding of charcoal

Here's a question to ponder:

A graduate student in the archeology department has a collection of charred
wood samples that she has recovered from various sites on Easter Island.  She
is attempting to embed them and section them in hopes of identifying the
She is currently embedding these samples in Spurrs, but hasn't had very much
luck cutting them because of incomplete infiltration.  I suspect that part of
her problem is she is trying to process these things by hand using a vacuum
dessicator.  But is Spurrs the best thing to embed in?
