Position Title: HISTOPATHOLOGY TECHNICIAN

Duties: Utilizes knowledge of histotechnology principles, practices, and
procedures (to include the theories, techniques, and practices unique to
Anatomic Pathology) sufficient to perform assigned duties. Conducts an
annual
update and review of all pr
ocedures, material, and personnel requirements within the section.
Establishes new procedures, implements and maintains a quality control
program, and evaluates overall operations of the section to maintain
compliance with accreditation requirements fo
r College of American Pathologists, and Joint Commission for Accreditation of
Healthcare Organizations. Takes corrective actions identified in
accreditation inspections. Ensures the effective use, operations, and
calibration of all instruments within
the section. Advises specialists in other sections of the laboratory or
other
services on new or advanced histological procedures. Provides information on
new or advanced histological procedures. Provides information and is invol!
!
ved in the selection of new reagents and equipment. Attends in service
training programs, professional meetings, instructional courses, and reads
technical journals to gain knowledge in new procedures. Performs specialty
testing and staining procedure
s requiring expertise in histology. Selects appropriate stains to
demonstrate
specific elements or components of tissue to analyze and interpret a variety
of reactions to verify results or determine what steps to take to reclaim
tissue or slide. Perfo
rms other duties as assigned.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Incumbent must participate in the Department of
Defense (DOD) Electronic Fund Transfer program as a condition of employment
in
accordance with DOD Comptroller Policy dated 22 September 1992.
Qualification Requirements: QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must meet one of the following conditions (1) EDUCATION, (2)
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE, or (3) COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION to be
considered eligible for this position.
1. EDUCATION: One (1) full year of graduate education. (A copy of transcript
is required)
2. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience
equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal service. Specialized
experience is defined as experience that equipped the applicant with the
particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the
duties
of the position, and that
is typically in or related to the work of this position.
3. COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent
combinations of successfully completed directly related progressively higher
level graduate school education as described in Education above, and
experience may be used to meet the qualification requirement for this
position. NOTE: When combining spec
ialized experience and appropriate level education, first determine your
total
qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade
level, then determine your experience as a percentage of the total experience
required for the gr
ade level. Finally,
add the two percentages together. The total percentages must at least equal
100 percent to qualify.
BASIS OF RATING: To be eligible, applicants must receive a score of at least
70 out of a possible 100 points. Veterans entitled to preference may receive
an additional 5 to 10 points added to their score. Qualified applicants will
be referred in scor
e order (including veterans preference).
