Hi,
I am really in over my head. I am reviewing our CPT charges for cytology
and the descriptions are so vague that I am having trouble. Part of my
confusion also, is that we are only accessioning cytology specimens and then
sending them to a private lab for processing, screening, and staining, the
slides are then returned to our pathologists, who dictate a report.
Most of our cytology's are non-gyn specimens. I need to ask the following
question:
1. If the hospital is charging the patient for the technical only
portion of the bill, can the hospital use the following codes:
88104-Cytopathology fluids, washings or brushings, except cervical
and vaginal; smears with interpretation. We use this one for
unstained smears like FNA's
88108-Cytopathology, concentration technique smears and
interpretation. We use this one for thin prep and cytospins.
88305-Cellblocks any source for interpretation.
Help, Thanks, I really appreciate this much.
